My 3 year old Black German Shep. is losing hair? Advice?

He has been losing hair since we adopted him from my sister and her 3 cat household---he has huge spots and bare areas---he also is EXTREMELY timid and wil CRY CRY CRY when we leave the house---we always say, "Be right back, Shane." it sometimes helps....we are thinking he was bred close because he has EXTREMELY awkward hind legs--he is SOOOO lovable, though..please advise if you have any similar circumstances or advice! Thanks

German Shepards shed tons in spring but I have never seen bare spots Perhaps hind hip x rays could tell a lot

are there any sores on his skin? if so could be mange. if not stress could do it but not to that extent i think. i would get his thyroid checked. hypothyroid could also cause it. when you leave the house don't make a big deal about it, just leave. if he has certain triggers that make him anxious, picking up car keys, putting on shoes... etc, start doing those things like you're preparing to leave but don't. as in walk around jingling your keys for 20 minutes or so, take shoes on and off... you get the idea. when you get home, if hes been good give him a treat, but if you have a mess to clean up, don't. theres a great new drug out called reconcile for separation anxiety. if your not int rested in medication, there website has some great tips on it anyway. i hope that helps. good luck!

First of all, make sure he doest have mange. But it could be dry skin. My German shep. has dry skin. The vet gave me a medication and told me to bath him in an oatmeal shampoo. You can find it at your local Wal-mart or pet store.
