My beloved 8 month old Smooth Collie puppy is losing hair above his tail, he is not chewing it off.?

He has been to the vet and has been given Prednisone (5 MG tabs) and Cephalexin (500 mg). I feed him large breed dry puppy food and Iams or Pedigree puppy cans. I feed my older Smooth home cooked ground meat with rice and veg and the puppy eats it too. They both get Vitashine oil (omega 3) for their coats and olive oil on top of their food and my older dog's coat and the puppy's front part up to his waist look fabulous. This has been going on for the last three months or so and his fur is very sparse now, I can see his "polka dot" pattern on his skin under his fur. He does not seem overly irritated by it but he still has some bites there, not flea bites, more like pimples coming up from below. Is this a hot spot? Mange? Please, please help, his poor bum will freeze in our Canadian winter! Thank you in advance for any advice and ideas.

We have a female Rough Collie and when she was younger (she is now 5 1/2) she would get these "scabs" on her muzzle, on the tips of her ears and on some parts of her legs. It was the strangest thing - they weren't bloody at all and they kind of appeared overnight. Her coat would kind of "hold" them in place, but if I pulled them, they came off easily and I could see bare skin underneath.

I freaked out (understandably, I think) and took her to our vet. We tried a few courses of antibiotics and Prednisone with no luck and the scabs would just kind of come and go. I finally took her to a Veterinary Dermatologist but of course by the time I could finally get an appointment, the scabs weren't as prominent so she didn't really have anything to look at (even though I brought photos). The dermatologist didn't have too many suggestions either.

We were feeding her the best food we could get and I finally decided to switch her to a Lamb and Rice formula and it seemed to clear it right up. About a year or two ago, my husband accidentally bought a beef-based version of the same brand and the scabs started coming back almost immediately.

Lamb and Rice formula is often prescribed for dogs with food allergies. If you've already tried that route, I'd see if you can get him to a Dermatologist to see if they have any more insight. You can find a listing on http://www.acvd.org/. Good luck!

We had a similar problem caused by doing what the vet reccommended. We changed to Wal-Mart brand foods and lost a breeding season. we also had giant hair loss.

We finally switched back to Purina One and our kennel is coming back. We again have puppies for sale!

Cephalexin is an antibiotic, so your vet must think your dog has a skin infection.

If it doesn't seem to resolve on the Cephalexin and prednisone, have your vet do a skin scraping for analysis.

after ya get puppy to the vet and he tells ya its mange then ya gotta get rid of it....scrub down EVERYTHING hes been sleeping in and eating or drinking out of....then....add pepper to his diet once a week....any treats ya give him a touch of pepper about as much as you'd put on your own dish...make sense???it really does work...

stress can cause that hair loss......is there anything different that you could think of that could be stressing him out....my female does that after she has puppies or when she's really stressed....i have 8 yorkies and only one that looses her hair by her tail also. give it time it will grow back.....good luck
