My dog is losing hair?

My dog is 14 and is starting to lose hair down her lower back and tail. She generally has a beautiful coat and now has little flakes coming off. Does anyone have any good suggestions on what I can do to fix it?

I'd say take her to the vet. With her age though, I'd start preparing to say goodbye. Dogs generally start losing hair and getting bald spots when they are stressed out or sick. Take her to the vet to see if there's anything significantly wrong w/her and if so, what can be done to make her comfortable. Good Luck :)

You can also try increasing the fat in her diet. Give her a teaspoon of bacon grease on her food or, if you cut the fat off of your meat, give her some of that. It won't hurt and may help.

Well for starters your dog is 14 years old, quite far down the track for their lifespan and may be just balding. Another possible reason for dogs shedding hair is seasonal coats, even my dog (who is 10 years old) sheds more in the spring because her dna says "No more winter shed extra hair!!!" so that is generally why my dog sheds. Also if the dog is not being bathed at least once a month the hair's roots may start to weaken so if you haven't bathed them in a while try using a root strengthening shampoo.

With her age, I'd take her to the vet. It could be a multitude of things, diabetes, thyroid, liver, etc, that should be checked as soon as possible. It might also just be an allergy popping up, some dogs can acquire allergies as they age.
