My cat is losing her hair around her neck. What could cause this?

About 2 months ago my cat started losing her hair just a little around her neck. Over the past 2 months it has continued to fall out and is now around her entire neck. She is a 7 year old Persion. Anyone have any idea what would cause this? Thanks for your help. Mitch

Possibly an allergy. Have you noticed her itching it a lot? It would probably be best to take her to the vet. I doubt it is life threatening, but the cat is probably uncomfortable. Make sure you know what kind of food the cat is eating. Maybe even bring the ingrediant list.

Is the skin normal, or is there a rash? This is a common place for flea infestations or flea allergies to manifest. Does she wear a collar? I have seen many cats that wear a collar begin to lose the fur in that area, even if the collar is not too tight.

When I rescued Willie at the pound, he had a severe case of earmites that had caused him to scratch off almost all the hair around his neck. My vet used Revolution to fix him up. Have the vet look at it as it could also be ringworm.

Its normal. Try taking off her collar or something. Thats the cause of it. No worries. This happend to all of my cats and people call me cat lady!

I am so sorry I have a himalayan persion named crystal and she hasnt been losing her hair but she is only 5 maybe it is because your cat is getting earitated and it is getting flea's maybe if it has a collor the color is rubbing off its hair maybe it is getting old!! if you cant figure out why take it to the vet!!

When this happened to my cat, it was because he'd developed a food allergy to fish. Cats can develop food allergies to anything they've been eating for a long time.

I would take her to the vet, so they can rule out mites, mange and ringworm. Thyroid disorders can also cause fur loss around the head and neck. If all these tests come back negative, then they'll pursue the allergy route.

For mine, I actually changed him to Natural Balance duck and pea (a food for allergic cats) and got down to the heart of it before the results from the tests were even in.
