Why does our cat clean himself so much that he's losing hair on one side?

The cat is 5 years old and appears healthy and happy other than this desire to keep licking/cleaning himself so much. We're feeding him skin sensitive Science Diet to see if that will help. How can we get him to stop cleaning so much?

That could be a nervous issue. My siamese cat did that for about 6 months solid - licked a big open spot on her belly between her hind legs and up her abdomen from stressing out so much. The vet - believe it or not - put her on Prozac for separation anxiety. Granted the dosage is far less than what a human takes, but it really did mellow her out and the fur grew back. Ask your vet to look into the possibility that it is some kind of a mental disorder or stress - he'll probably ask you all sorts of questions about change of furniture, new additions to the family, dietary changes, etc.

You might think about getting the animal tested for allergies,,, my mother-in-laws cat did the same thing and come to find out the cat had allergies.

I've never seen or heard that before but your cat might have a skin diease or something. I'm not sure since I'm no Vet. Our cats don't lick themselves a lot. I advice you to take him to a vet.
