Why would a cat be losing hair and drinking more water than usual?

She is 2 years old and a tuxedo cat. She is normally healthy and should be gaining her winter coat. There has been a case of athletes foot in the house, so I'm a little concerned that it may be ringworm.

Ringworm does make cats lose their hair as does hyperthyroidism. You will probably have to take her to the vet to get some anti-fungal shampoo if it is indeed ringworm. They will have to do some blood work to test for hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism would make her drink more than usual too.

Take her to the vet IMMEDIATELY. It could be feline leukemia. My kitten was born with it. We first noticed when he started losing hair and drinking tons of water. Get her to the vet ASAP and she stands a good chance of living. Our kitten is now 1 year old and is healthy as a horse. Vets can do amazing work these days. Just don't wait to take her in. The sooner she goes to the vet the sooner she gets better. Good Luck!

If she drinks a lot of water she could be diabetic or have kidney problems. You need to have her checked out by a vet. You might need to give her insulin. Actually quite common, but usually the cats are older when they get it.

It has the symptoms of diabetes... The vet could tell by a simple blood test. Does it drink a LOT OF WATER.. Does it urinate a lot? Eat but not gain.. I had a cat that way and I gave it insuliin shots twice a day for 4 years. He was the sweetest little boy kitty

Excessive thirst / urination is the #1 sign of feline diabetes. I had a cat that was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago. She also started shedding profusely. I would take your cat to the vet if she is urinating frequently. They can do a glucose curve on her.

I am warning you that if your cat does have diabetes it is fairly expensive and time consuming to treat. It is a major commitment.

Good luck and I hope it is something else.

The first thing that popped into my mind was "diabetes". But since some posters have said it's a sign of feline leukemia.....well, no matter what, it could be something serious. Best case scenario; ringworm. So get her to the vet immediately.

And good luck, I hope she's ok!

it might be a urinary tract infection. They usually drink a lot of water if they have one

I went thru that with my cat, I found out 2 years ago he had diabetes, he was losing hair and pulling his hair out...I'd take her to the vet and see if thats what it is..
