Why would a cat start losing hair on the top backside of the body and underneath on the stomach.?

Maybe he is licking himself too much? My friend does not have the money for a vet visit. Anyone have knowledge on what might be causing this?

Your friends cat is probably stressed. When cats are stressed they will pull the hair out which looks like they're over grooming.

Did your friend get another/new cat or dog? Are there things going on in the home that might stress the cat? Is the cat otherwise healthy?

Stress in a cat is usually because of some kind of change that the cat is not happy about. It doesn't necessarily have to be a recent change. It could be something that has developed over time. I know, because the same thing happed to my Kitty. Her stress came much later. Took me awhile to figure it out even though it was right in front of my nose. Problem was taken care of, my Kitty's stress went away.

Your friend is going to have to look at what's going on in her home. New pet, new person etc. If the problem isn't solved, the stress will continue.

Tell your friend good luck and hope the outcome is good too.

Yes, that may be a cause. Any flea problems? They can also get obsessive compulsive licking. If he has fleas then get on flea prevention-from the vet, it's about $15 for a single dose. Lend her the money if you need to. At some point you may want the cat checked out for any underlying issues if the problem continues and flea meds don't work. Don't try flea collars, flea powders, sprays or over the counter stuff. IT DOESN'T WORK! The money would be best spent buying the real stuff.

It can be a number of things , ranging from a "yeast" infection of the ears, to poor food diet, to skin rashes, to alergies. Try to tackle the problem with one approach at a time, or simply take the cat to the Vet and be done with it. I only hope it's not an acute case of one of the above as you'll find yourself visiting the Vet about every month for shots or treatments costing an average or $30.00 per visit.

Good Luck

Sounds like my cat, who is nervous and stressed much of the time and hides in the closet when the doorbell rings.

OR check the cleanliness of the litter box and surrounding area. The cat could want it to be cleaner than it is.

His nerves or stress could be the problem or it could be dry skin. And you can buy shampoo for that at a pet store. So Id try that before a vet. And also babyoil gel rubbed into the area might help and wont hurt him if he licks it. Hope this helps you some.Good Luck,!!!!!

Might be a flea allergy.
