How long has this been going on? Have you been itchy or seen any weird spots on yourself. Take your cat to the vet before it gets worse. It could be mange,(depends on how it looks) there are 2 different types: sarcoptic (scabies) which can be passed to us and other pets and demodex which won't be transmitted.

I'm concerned about chatterlivie1, what vet do you go to that just tells you to give them the meds without discussing anything further. You may want to go elsewhere.

And I don't know why you haven't taken your cat to a vet. That is what you need to do about this.

Take it to a vet, and take yourself to a docter. If the vet says"Oh just give him this" Do not go until he tells you exactly what it is.

Sounds like an infection. Nothing to fool with. Cats can not get over that sort of thing without help from a vet. If you want your cat to survive, take it in right away.

it could be mange a common but serious decease you will have to take him down to the vet or it could also be ring worm ..you need to get him some meds and they are don't cost a lot of money

I don't know what it is, but I did want to warn you that a lot of times the solution vets use for stuff like this (like if it's indeed ringworm) is steroids. Steroids cause diabetes in cats. Yes, just one shot can do it. But vets do them willy-nilly without batting an eyelash. I'm the one online hanging out with people with the diabetic cats watching the results.

If that is what your vet wants to do, please try to find another solution. I admit I'm not terribly familiar with these other solutions, other than knowing plenty of people who do find other routes that don't involve steroids. You may be able to find something just doing a google for whatever it is, or find a Yahoo!Group involving the issue, or perhaps try holisticat.com for some other answers.
