he licks his belly and nibbles around his ankles he his losing hair over half his belly and around his ankles on all 4 paws. does anyone know what this could be?????

Mine did the same thing. The vet was sure it was food allergies but I asked for a biopsy and it was not allergies. We decided it's stress. It started when we moved to a new house and she still does it, 7 years later. She now takes a small dose of tranquilizer every other day. She could take more, but it makes her sleepy, so this is a compromise. She still pulls out some hair, but she mostly still has her personality.

Sounds like and allergy to food or something. Some animals are allergic to flea bites. Call you vet as soon as possible.

Could be allergies. This is a common place for cats with behavior problems to lick as well. They will lick all the fur from their bellies. Your vet can prescribe some anti anxiety medication to help. Have him checked out to make sure there is no other medical problem.

He could have an allergy to fleas, soap, lots of things or a skin dermatitis or even a parasite that is causing him to itch. A food allergy is usually evident on the face and around the chin, I know this from experience with my own food allergic cat! You should really take the cat to a vet, if it is a dermatitis or parasite, it could be dangerous to his health.

What has the vet told you - because surely you've taken it to the vet to get a professional opinion and you're not just counting on advice from strangers who can't see your cat and are not vets, right? It could be an allergy, it could be a skin infection, it could be a flea allergy, it could be any number of things - NONE of which can be answered by posting this question online. Why are you letting this cat suffer??? GO-TO-YOUR-VET!

Could be a food allergy. My cat was doing the same thing. It turns out he is allergic to chicken, so I had to find something that didn't have chicken or chicken byproducts listed in the first three ingredients of the food. No east feat. Even if chicken isn't mentioned in the flavor, it was always one of the first three ingredients listed. The only one I could find is Wellness Complete Health (the only chicken in it is chicken fat, which is the 7th ingredient). Since I switched to that. he stopped licking his fur off and it has all grown back.

Before you do anything else, have the vet check him out to see if he can pinpoint the problem.

He probably shedding his a lot more than most because it must be very hot where you are and cats shed their fur when it hot to cool down. He is nibbling himself because he might has fleas. The flea problem is if he is outside a lot he could get them. His licks his belly because he wants to be clean and maybe the flea problem.

Could be a food allergy. That's what one of my cats is going through now. To test for allergies is expensive though. There's shots to temporarily help it grow back in but it never seems to stay!
