Cat losing hair?

What could cause my cat to lose his hair around his tail bone/hip area, no other symptoms have been noticed and I havn't seen him scratching or licking.

It may be due to stress levels. I would suggest bringing the cat to the vet for a checkup - just to make sure it is nothing too serious. It is possible that the cat may lick or scratch the area when not in sight. Or, it may be possible that the cat may have fleas. Fleas usually tend to be sighted in that region. It also may be a skin rash.

sounds like something hormonal....or thyroid. take him to your vet and they can run tests to single out the problem.

our yellow lab had thyroid problems and she lost alot of her hair all over and it started around her tail.

vet!

My cat has the same problem. The vet said not to worry because it is a build up in the anus glands. I assume the cat bites the fur off as a way to stop the irritation. The vet did not give me any real treatment such as medication, and my cat seems to be in no pain.

My best friend just took her cat to the vet for the same thing he told her that the cat was allergic to her food. She had been feeding the cat the same food for quite some time so apparently it was an allergy that just developed. But just to be safe you should take him to the vet.
