She is 12 mths old and has had this for quite some time. It did get better however it has come back agin. Im not sure if she could have a reaction to the pine and cyprus trees that surround her paddock. We really dont have a vet that specialises in horses in our area. The discahrge is clear and only once had it been a white discharge, in which I rinsed out with luke warm water. None of the other horses have a problem. What would be causing this to happen? Open to any suggestions.
My Paint filly has weeping eyes and losing hair around her eyes could she be allergic to somthing?
It sounds like allergies, you can buy saline for horses by farnam its called clear eyes and try washing them out twice a day, do not use water as the pH is different and it may irritate them a bit (Try putting water in your eye it actually makes them feel dry) which will make her allergies worse the saline may soothe her eye allergy. You can use a sort moist cloth to wash any crust off of her face around her eye, the build up can make them lose hair, and picking it with your fingers can irritate it and spread bacteria, the eyes are very sensitive to germs and debris keep it clean and apply aloe vera cream to let hair regrow. Do not let it run into her eyes, put it on in barn at night as sun will melt it. If it persists and bothers her ask the vet and try calling a horse vet even if they are far away a phone call won't hurt. Good Luck.

My paint stud has the same thing. I think he is allergic to the dust in the hay. He looks like he has been crying all the time. My vet said as long as his eyes are not swollen or red and the discharge is clear not to worry about it. That it is an allergic reaction, much like the itchy watery eyes a person gets. Just keep her face rinsed off and she should be fine.

My recently acquired Paint mare has pretty much the same thing by the sound of it, and it's probably sunburn. You don't mention how much white (if any) she has on her face. My mare has a completely white face, and is burnt, peeling and has lost some hair. You could try sunscreen, though personally I've found it doesn't seem to help much, especially since it can't be applied close to the eyes (where it's needed!). Hope this helps.

Sounds like an allergy to me. It could be to a variety of things such as pollen, dust esp in the hay etc. If her eyes become red and swollen or 'puffy' then it's getting worse and you should take her to the vet. You said that it went away for a while and is now back so it could be a seasonal allergy eg when there is more pollen in the air. My suggestion would be to wipe her face where the discharge is and if necessary rinse out her eyes and also watch to make sure it doesn't get worse.
